I like having a solar panel on my car because it is a conversation starter about alternative energy. It might, MIGHT give me better fuel economy, I’ll post about that when I burn through a few tanks of gas. Mostly, it is handy to be able to plug stuff into my car inverter when I’m away from my house without starting my engine as often.
I paid about US $1,000 for the components, but prices have come down a lot. I’ve had good luck with http://advancepower.net/ having reasonable prices and well tested products. At this posting they have a 50 watt solar panel for $55 (a 50 to 80 watt panel will likely fit on car roof tops, check dimensions of car and panel first); a small charge controller for $80; inverter–1000 watt TRUE sine wave $400–1500 watt MODIFIED sine wave $180 (I have no idea if my wave-form snobbery is justified, in the old days modified sine wave inverters made audio equipment buzz, motors overheat, computers fry…); fuse, wire, bolts, locknuts, washers, grommets….$40.
Cool!
