The compressor on our AC unit went out after 30+ years and our Warranty Company was taking way too long to get it fixed. I was faced with either getting a new AC unit for the house or wait for the Warranty Company to find a replacement compressor. I decided after 3 days of Arizona summer heat to put 3 window units in. Boy am I glad I did. It took them exactly 1 month to get a new compressor for us. Since we installed them in the bedrooms, we turn the rest of the house off now and save money by just cooling down the bedrooms at night. No doubt they will pay for themselves soon. Other solutions: Make 1/4″ groove in middle of wood to accept plexiglass, that way you only need to nail and glue the joints to hold the plexiglass in. Paint your MDF to prolong it’s life. Screw or fasten the AC unit to the front side of the MDF or window sill, especially if unit is higher than ground floor.
