The European Union began an investigation on Thursday into allegations that Chinese solar panel manufacturers were illegally selling products into European markets at below market value.
A group of 25 solar panel companies in Europe have lodged a complaint with the European Commission.
China produces about 65 percent of the world’s solar panels.
According to an EU statement, last year they exported about $26 billion worth of solar panels to the 27 nation bloc.
The EU also said the investigation would take more than a year.
The statement said: “It is possible according to trade defense rules to impose provisional anti-dumping duties within 9 months, provided there is sufficient prima facie evidence of dumping.”
Earlier this year, the US imposed a tariff of around 30 percent on imported Chinese solar panels. On a recent visit to Beijing, German Chancellor Angela Merkel cautioned the disagreement should be resolved with talks and not restrictions.
The Chinese regime and the companies involved have denied the allegations, and sent out a warning to the EU that trade relations could be compromised if the case is investigated.
