담백 빈티지와 내추럴 위트의 하모니, 페퍼톤스의 다섯 번째 매력발산 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]!

뉴테라피 남성 2인조 밴드 페퍼톤스가 8월 14일 다섯 번째 정규 앨범 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]를 발표했다. 지난 2012년 4월 24일 [비기너스 럭(Beginner's Luck)]으로 경쾌하고 명랑한 뉴테라피 뮤직의 표본을 만든 페퍼톤스는 2년여 만에 선보이는 정규앨범 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]를 통해 끝없이 이어지는 음악적 진화를 그려냈다. 안테나뮤직에서 가장 부지런한 아티스트로 꼽히는 페퍼톤스는 이번 앨범에 무려 14트랙을 수록했다.

페퍼톤스가 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]에서 하고 싶은 이야기는 위트 있게 풀어나가는 일상이다. 진지하지만 무겁지 않고, 농담 같지만 누구나 한 번쯤은 겪었을 이야기들로 채운 앨범이 바로 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]다. [비기너스 럭(Beginner's Luck)]이 멤버들의 역량에 집중된 앨범이라면 이번 앨범은 ‘자연스러움’에 초점을 맞췄다고 할 수 있다. [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]는 일부러 멋을 내지 않았다. 빈티지한 밴드 사운드를 위해 고전적인 방식들로 녹음을 마쳤으며, 오토튠 없는 담백한 보컬, 1960년대 분위기를 자아내는 녹음 방식 등 고전적 매뉴얼을 따랐다.

누구나 공감할 수 있는 상황에서 느껴지는 감정의 변화를 세련되게, 동시에 흡입력 있게 풀어나가는 부분에서는 멤버들의 내공이 드러났다. [비기너스 럭(Beginner's Luck)]과 마찬가지로 멤버 신재평, 이장원이 수록곡 전곡을 직접 작사, 작곡했으며, 편곡, 믹싱 작업까지 참여했다. 특히 4집 앨범부터 함께 하고 있는 기타리스트 양재인, 피아니스트 양태경, 드러머 신승규가 참여해 완성도를 높였다.

페퍼톤스는 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)]에서 데뷔 후 처음으로 트리플 타이틀을 확정할 만큼 자신감을 보였다. 인디여신 옥상달빛과 입을 맞춘 ‘캠퍼스 커플’, 출근 지하철에서의 백일몽을 그린 ‘굿모닝 샌드위치맨’, 연애의 어려움을 재치있게 풀어낸 ‘몰라요’ 등 3곡을 타이틀곡으로 확정했다. 아울러 ‘풍년’, ‘근데 왜’, ‘파워 앰프(POWERAMP!!)’, ‘솔라 시스템 슈퍼 스타스(SOLAR SYSTEM SUPER STARS)’, ‘청춘(for 영화 ‘족구왕’)’, ‘스커트가 불어온다’, ‘뉴 찬스(NEW CHANCE!)’, ‘패스트(FAST)’, ‘도시락’, ‘땡큐(THANK YOU)’ 등 다양한 분위기의 노래가 속도감 있게 이어지며 앨범을 채웠다.

페퍼톤스는 [하이파이브(HIGH-FIVE)] 발매와 함께 3년째 진행해 오고 있는 클럽투어에 돌입한다. 8월 16일 부산에서 포문을 여는 ‘페퍼톤스 2014 클럽투어-하이파이브’는 페퍼톤스의 클럽투어 사상 처음으로 서울을 포함, 대구, 대전, 광주, 부산 등 5개 도시에서 개최된다.
