  • What I’ve learnt about inverter efficiency in an off grid environment. Learn about just how much battery capacity you might be wasting doing essentially nothing.. Here’s the reference I mention in the video:-
    Inverter Efficiency vs Load:- http://www.homepower.com/article/?file=HP113_pg36_Perez
    Factors effecting inverter efficiency:- http://www.solar-facts.com/inverters/inverter-efficiency.php

In this video I show you how I added an off-grid solar system to an old RV. When this van was sold the only real use for solar panels was on a pocket calculator :P so its great to bring it in line with the times. (If only it was possible to update the mpg!)

This kit I used included 2x 100w solar panels from Windynation. The cells are made by sunpower (a German company) and are freaking amazing. Also, we rip out a battery box, fix panels to the roof with velcro and connect it all up to a solar charge controller. I share the results after 7 weeks of use at the end of the video too.

    Some notes:

How to work out the size of your Charge Controller
    - Work out the size of Solar Charge Controller you need based on the wattage of your panels. If you plan for 300 Watts then divide that by the voltage of your system. In our case 12v. That gives 25 – which is the Amperage we need for the Charge Controller – ideally add 20 to 25% margin – so for 300Watts a 30Amp charge controller should be totally fine.

Why get a Charge Controller that ‘fits’?
    - If you do not then it will not handle the extra charge when the batteries are full and you will over charge the batteries.. which will make them vent more and eventually damage/destroy them.

Why does a bit of shadow ruin the solar panel‘s effectiveness?
    - To protect the cells from damage (creating sun spots where shadows are cast) will have a few diodes to prevent it. If a small shadow is cast it shuts of the area of panel that is covered by the diode – which could easily be 1/3rd (or more) of your panel.
