With a recent incentivised government scheme by the government to get more solar panels on homes across the country, and with solar power becoming quite normal I wanted to point out a potential issue for people who have had solar panels installed, some meters begin to read rEd which stands for reverse energy detected (obviously because the solar panels are now creating energy and feeding this to the grid) and this triggers the meter to kick in a new rate which prevents them ever having to pay out, and also to prevent loss of profits due to you generating your own energy, or even more than your own consumption especially in the summer sun.
Where energy companies rather than simply correcting the problem and allowing the meter to feed energy back onto the grid (where the rate was significantly high in the first hour of installation generating 10 units in this instance) they will take 6 weeks to see what the energy generation rate is and adjust the meter to a level that still means they make their profits regardless of how much energy you actually create, and actually use off their grid and to ensure that they never have to pay out in instances where you’re generating power to their customers and would be entitled to a payout.
If you have had solar panels recently installed be sure to check your bills as your meter can be using 100 units a day where previous consumption would have averaged less than 100 per week, and instead of saving money with solar panels you would see an increased bill due to this new rate that kicks in instead.
Something needs to be done about this and I will try to keep an eye out see if this becomes a more common problem, I have seen online notes that 71% increased costs in electricity have been noted since installing solar panels on average, which is silly because rather than benefiting from the savings of generating power from the sun, they are getting charged more by electricity companies where the meter classifies generating electricity as “tampering”
