A startup developing solar-powered road panels has recently finished its first public installation in the City of Sandpoint, Idaho.
The solar road panels, developed by Solar Roadways, are made of tempered glass and contain LED lights. The glass is strong enough to support the weight of semitrailers.
The panels are equipped with microprocessors, which allow them to communicate with each other, a control station, and vehicles. They also have heating elements that can prevent the accumulation of ice and snow on the road’s surface.
The solar road panels can generate enough power to light up and provide power for nearby restrooms.
According to New Atlas, the second public installation of the solar road panels will be in Conway Missouri, at a rest stop along Route 66.
