In this 2013 wintertime video my custom hybrid solar powered electric bike operates on just 3 volts or sub 15 watts of solar energy power, if more amps were available more torque would enable a higher speed e-bike. That is what Im trying to show in this solar bike video, most solar panels are designed for a higher voltage rather than a low voltage with high amperage.
Watch my 10 volt solar powered demonstration ride here:
E-biking demonstration video uploaded February 14 –
riding rocks, sand, ice, and snow!
The lightweight hand made solar panel I built is rated for approximately 24 watts solar energy in optimal conditions. Monocrystalline silicon solar cells are used but they offer just 16-17% in efficiency and are extremely brittle, newer flexible PV cell technology is 24% efficient.
Two years ago in mid July, I initially performed a 3 volt solar powered e-bike ride and was successful, I never got to video document that special solar bike test and have diligently been fighting set backs since then to make this video happen.
Out from my tool chest I have now shown a reflector that has extremely high diffuse reflectance and greater than 97% reflectance across the visible spectrum.
Later in 2013 or 2014 photovoltaics and batteries are going to improve by orders of magnitude. I believe we are on the cusp of a new age of hybrid solar powered transportation.
E-Bike riding on ice and snow I keep my tires at minimal air pressure of around 30psi or less which helps with traction, however during this video recording I did forget to maximize the psi to minimize rolling resistance for the solar powered test. In effect, I did not get to show a solo solar energy powered ride. On a side note.. Since this video, I have performed the same test with properly pressurized tires on level and flat surface with 15 watts of solar power and successfully rolled on down the street.
About the hybrid solar powered e-bike
low and high gears with 9 speeds each
over 2000km’s of battery+pedal powered street, trails and -30 degree weather riding in just the past two months.
It is very easy to double the torque with a hybrid pedelec, either with energy coming from batteries or solar.
Project SolarCross is a year or more behind development schedule and would never have really succeeded if not for help and support from friends, family, and generous contributions from:
