As we continue fixing everything that winter destroyed as it pertains to the trenches and holes for our water system, the last thing to tackle picking out the rocks that fell in the cistern hole. However, rather than try to do some simple clean up, we decided that it would be best to take both cisterns completely out of hole, remove all rock around the cisterns, and then bed the bottom of the cisterns completely in sand. Having so much labor and money invested in this system, it would only seem foolish to take a shortcut and allow rock to surround the cistern – especially when the manufacturer said to not backfill with soil containing rock larger than 3″ in diameter! That said, if feels good to do the job right, even if it requires more time, and we WILL get this water system finished this year!
