STORYLINE
Police were investigating after six men were gunned down in Monterrey, one of Mexico’s most violent cities.
The shooting on Wednesday was the latest incident to take place in the business and industrial hub that has been hard hit by drug-related violence in the past few months.
Local newspaper Milenio reported that the men were shot in front of a house in a neighbourhood west of Monterrey.
According to Milenio, investigators found at least 10 bullet cases at the crime scene.
A banner with a message allegedly from an organised criminal group was left on the bodies, Milenio reported.
No arrests related to the case have been made.
Violence attributed to organised crime has killed more than 35-thousand people between December 2006 and the end of 2010.
Authorities have provided no figures for 2011, although some experts say the death toll has now climbed above 40-thousand.
Meanwhile, the Mexican army said its troops have dismantled a telecommunications system set up by organised crime in four northern states.
A Defence Department statement on Thursday said soldiers confiscated 167 antennas and 166 power supplies that gang members used to communicate among themselves and to monitor military movements.
The operation also netted more than 1,400 radios and 2,600 mobile phones in the border states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila and in the state of San Luis Potosi.
The army hasn’t said which cartel was affected.
During the summer, Mexico’s navy dismantled a communication system used by the Zetas cartel in the Gulf state of Veracruz.
The Zetas have a strong presence in all four of the states involved in the army’s operation.
