Off Grid Solar Power – DIY LED lighting.
My parents, who live about a half mile up the road from the shack, are in the process of building a new house. It’s a steel-framed shed, 8.5×10 metres, with a 4m wide verandah on the East side. It’s all been approved by the shire council as a residence and is being build to code. Because they’re doing the work themselves, it’s taking a while, but there’s been a fair bit of progress in the last few months since they retired from selling produce at local farmers’ markets.
They’ve already spent thousands of dollars on copper cable to bring the power up the hill from the old house, but in the meantime, when they needed electricity at the new house, they’ve been running the petrol (gasoline) generator. Until recently.
A few weeks ago, a fellow stallholder at one of the markets bought some deep cycle batteries and because I’d been talking about switching to solar, they started asking him questions. Anyway, long story short, he told them about flexible LED strip lighting and lent them a small solar panel.
I bought some reels of the LED strip lights on eBay for a tad less than $20 for a 5 metre roll and the next thing you know, Mum & Dad have got quality lighting in their new house.
They’ve since bought the solar panel from their mate and have also managed to score some free car batteries from another mate, who has a mechanic shop. So for less than $40, my parents are able to provide a fair chunk of light to most of their new home.
When they they get to the wiring stage, they’ll have 240VAC (standard in Australia) and 12V lighting

Make Solar Energy Work For You
When put to use efficiently, solar energy can do a lot for either a home or business. You can get potentially significant tax breaks, serious reductions in your utility bills and sleep better at night knowing you’re inflicting less harm on the environment. Keep reading to learn more about solar power and how to put it to work for you.
Be aware of the fact that there are a couple of different kinds of photo-voltaic solar energy panels. Polycrystalline panels, while relatively affordable, lack the efficiency of monocrystalline panels. When choosing solar energy supplies for your home, look for the most energy-efficient materials available.
If you decide to put solar energy panels on your home, remember to keep them clean. Your solar panels must reflect the sun’s rays in order to store the sun’s energy for use in your home or business. If they are dirty, they can not effectively do this. By keeping them clean, you will get the most bang for your buck!
Get the records from your energy company on how much energy you have used in the last five years. You can then use this information to figure out exactly how much power you will need solar energy to provide for you home. Having the past five years is important so that you can see that some years you will need more energy than others.
You have to think about whether or not solar energy is a good choice for your home. You have many things to consider before making a decision. If your property is off the main grid, it’s possible that solar energy represents an excellent opportunity. In addition, if you have enough money saved up to pay for a solar energy system, you will save a lot of money on your utility bills, and soon, your investment will pay for itself.
Try to stay away from high pressure salespeople when scouting solar energy. Know what you’re looking for before ever setting foot in the shop. A high pressure salesperson can make you make a not so great choice and end up wasting your money.
Cleaning your solar panels does not need to be labor intensive. You want to avoid abrasive soaps at all costs, as they can deteriorate and even destroy your panels. So long as there is not caked up dust or bird droppings, frequent rinses with just hose water should be more than enough.
Know how light mixes with the trees around your property. You may think you’ve got the perfect spot for a solar panel, but watch it throughout the day. The sun coming in from different angles may lead to surprising shadows from trees and foliage. This will affect your solar output.
If you care about the environment in any way, you should check into getting involved with solar energy. Solar power is extremely friendly to the Earth, since it uses sunlight as a renewable source of energy. Utilize solar energy for your needs instead of continued reliance on fossil fuels.
Keep your solar panels clean. If your solar panels are dirty or obstructed in any way, they won’t work as well. Keep an eye on your solar panels and clean them if they’re not quite looking their best. Hosing them down occasionally will ensure that they are much more efficient.
Solar energy offers many benefits, no matter who you are or where you live. Consider how you can benefit as well as how the reduced pollution can help the environment. Solar energy may not be the answer to all our energy problems, but it certainly is a very good start!
